One of the biggest mistakes emerging writers make is loading up the early chapters of their novels with too much backstory.
There is very little that a reader needs to know upfront in order to be invested in a character so why do writers do it? Often, because they're beginning the story in the wrong place, or because they want the reader to know information that isn't necessary to keep the forward momentum of a story going.
