There is very little that a reader needs to know upfront in order to be invested in a character so why do writers do it? Often, because they're beginning the story in the wrong place, or because they want the reader to know information that isn't necessary to keep the forward momentum of a story going.
What is backstory? How can it be included without it feeling like an info-dump? Where should it be incorporated? What are the different methods of organically including it?
